Friday Things

One of my favorite posts when I was writing on a regular basis was High Five for Friday. It was a link up with many other bloggers, and I don't know if it still exists, but I thought I would keep the concept alive at least on here. I love being reminded of the good things for the week!
Update: It does still exist! So I'm linking this post up with Lauren Elizabeth for High Five for Friday.

1. The Shawn Silvera Memorial 5k Run. I ran only my second 5k ever this past Saturday. There were so many more people than I expected including a women's running club! Although I initially felt disappointed by my race time, I realized that I did improve on my race time and ended up finishing in the top 15%. I guess I can't complain about that! Most of all, I enjoyed racing again!

2. New workout clothes. Doing laundry every three days so I have fresh workout clothes is getting a little old. I had some free time yesterday and went out to the outlet mall by my house to check out the Under Armour store. I picked up two shirts and a pair of capris. I wore the blue one today on my 5 mile run and I loved how cool I felt even with the humidity. The sweat wasn't just trapped like it is with my usual tops! I'm looking forward to trying out the capris and pink tank on my run on Sunday!

3. Favorite new necklace. I love this necklace. Gold and snakes aren't usually my style, but the employee at Express had this on and it looked so cute that I had to have it!

4. Planning out my workouts. I started using my Gmail calendar to plan out my workouts so I know what days to run, lift, etc. and how many miles I'm getting. I really like having scheduled workouts! I know that not every day is going to work out perfectly, but I'm a planner and this is working for me now as I'm trying to increase my mileage. Plus, I love crossing them out once I finish on my calendar! Does anyone have suggestions on a good app/ website to track workouts? Gmail calendar is working, but just curious what other people use!

5. This face. This is my love. With the near 100 degree weather we've been having lately, I had to give her a haircut so she would feel cooler. I think she looks pretty dang cute!

Those are a few of the good things from this week. I can't believe that it's Labor Day weekend already. I'm looking forward to spending some time with family and relaxing! Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Until next time~

Power of the Scale

I'm so jealous of people who don't let the scale have power over them. I wish I were like that! I weigh myself twice a week and that number can affect my mood. And I hate that!

This morning I stepped on the scale and my weight had gone up a little over half a pound. The thoughts running through my mind were similar to these ...
Did I not push myself hard enough this week?
Did I splurge too much?
Was it that yogurt I had last night for dessert?
Am I eating too much chocolate?

Ridiculous. All this over a half a pound or so of weight gain.

I know deep inside my brain that weight fluctuates day to day, throughout the day and can change depending on water retention, sleep, stress and probably this crazy humidity we've been experiencing. But, for one moment, all of that knowledge was pushed aside and I freaked out a little bit.

Losing weight came easy to me. I think I wanted it so bad and found motivation every day that the numbers on the scale just kept going down. Then I hit the weight I'm at now. It never dips below this "magic" number, but it does creep up every once in awhile by a few pounds. Nothing major. And it usually goes back in a day or two. But I think I've gotten my mind so used to seeing those numbers go down, that mentally I have a hard time with maintenance. I think I know I don't need to lose any more weight and that I'm happy with where I am, but there's still a little voice inside my head that allows those numbers on the scale to dictate my eating habits, how much time I spend at the gym, and controls my mood toward myself.

And I want to stop it.

So, how do I look at the numbers and just seem them for what they are - numbers. Numbers that keep me in balance, but don't dictate my life. I'm learning to love my body for all it can do - my strong legs that can carry me on a run, the arms that have amazing muscle tone, the abs that finally are starting to have definition, and the strength I have to carry me through the worst of days - and I need to let go of the number and focus on the good.

Until next time~

Finding My Passion

At age of 32, I think I have found my passion. Surprise, surprise ... it's running! Honestly, I never would have guessed that my passion would become running. But it makes me so happy and is something I truly enjoy doing. Crazy, right??!!

Although running has changed my body a lot, it's not what I love about it. So what do I love about it? Well, many things!

I love that it clears my mind. Melts away the stress, pushes away the worries.
I love that it challenges me.
I love that it makes me want to become better. Better than who? Just myself.
I love that I can inspire others.

I've done four races so far this summer. Not as many as I would like, but probably a good amount since I just started running in May! I am incredibly proud of myself that I improve on my time (my average pace per mile) each race. I have ran two 5ks, one four mile and one quarter marathon with more scheduled in the next couple of months. Every one was a challenge, and every one was amazingly fun.

There is a part of me that wants to challenge myself to run a half marathon yet this year. I won't lie, I'm seriously thinking about it. However, there is another part of me that says "you've only been running since MAY! Are you crazy?" I don't know at this point, but I am working on increasing my mileage, along with trying to increase my speed as well for my shorter runs.

I look in the mirror sometimes and think, "who is this girl?" This girl who loves to run, will go out even in 90 degree weather, who will drive by herself with no support system to a race, who loves presents that have to do with running and would imagine that a great day would include a trip to The Running Room or another shoe store to find the perfect fitting shoes. I would rather get running gear or a subscription to Running World than jewelry for sure!

One of the best gifts - compression socks!!

Running has become my passion. My hobby. My love. It is my hope to focus my blog more on this passion and inspire others around me. I always tell people: if I can do, you can do it. I look forward to sharing my passion with you!

Until next time~
